Annual Comprehensive Examination
We recommend a comprehensive examination annually. Since many of our patients use the computer on average 8 hours/day, their eyes are more likely to change because of their visual demands. We believe in preventative eye care.
Patients generally prolong seeing an eye doctor until they suffer from bad headaches, eyestrain, watery eyes, tired eyes, or other symptoms. By this time, not only is the work negatively affected, the patient’s lifestyle is impacted too. So, why wait until you have a problem when it can be fixed today? Call our office to make this important appointment today!
Our comprehensive examination includes:
- Complete evaluation of visual symptoms, visual requirements, diagnosis, and treatment
- Refraction for glasses prescription
- Contact lens evaluation, performed as needed
- Ocular motility testing
- Automated visual field testing
- Eye balance testing
- Color vision
- Glaucoma testing
- Cataract testing
- Blood Pressure
- Complete eye health assessment
- Retinal examination
- Computer Vision Exam
Over 140 million Americans work on a computer daily. About 87% of those people suffer from COMPUTER VISION SYNDROME (CVS). Symptoms of CVS include:
- Burning/ tired eyes
- Blurred / double vision
- Headaches
- Loss of focusing
- Pains in the neck and shoulder
What causes CVS is our eyes and brain react differently when focusing on printed text versus text on a computer screen. It is easier for our eyes to focus on characters in printed material because the characters are well-defined with good contrast. On the other hand, since the characters on the computer screen have varying contrast and its characters (pixels) are brightest at the center and fade in intensity towards the edges, our eyes work harder to maintain focus. As one views the screen, the scrolling and/or refreshing of various screens causes additional fatigue for the focusing muscles. Treatment for CVS is to have your eyes checked.
It is vital for you to make an appointment for a computer vision examination. This is a separate evaluation (in addition to a comprehensive exam) that is performed for those patients who use the computer for at least 2 hours/ day. This examination allows the doctor to evaluate ergonomics, lighting conditions, work situations, glare conditions, etc. and determine if a pair of specialized computer glasses is needed for your specific needs at work or at home.
Optically, there are different ways that we can decrease eyestrain while improving the quality of vision when using the computer. We offer the following options:
- Custom filters or tints
- Anti-glare coating
- Computer prescription glasses
- Specialty computer progressive lenses
Just like wearing a different pair of shoes for different activities, many patients need a separate pair of computer glasses for the different visual tasks that they perform. Some patients will need single-vision computer glasses while others may need to have computer progressive lenses.
Special coatings such as an anti-glare coating can greatly enhance vision by eliminating unwanted glare from coming into the eyes. Patients will notice improved productivity at work or at home because the eyes are more relaxed and less fatigued. Custom filters may be used and are often recommended to also help reduce eyestrain too.
Call and make an appointment today so we can help
your eyes feel better too!
TIP of the day: Taking breaks every 30 minutes can help the eye muscles relax and stretch out. These breaks can just be 15-20 seconds in length, but they will make the eyes feel much better by the end of the day.
Children’s Exams
Young Children will not be able to tell their parents that they cannot see well if they do not truly know what good vision should be. The vision that they are born with is normal to them. That is why it is important to have your children’s eyes checked to ensure that the eyes develop properly. Children with undiagnosed eye disorders are more likely to have to repeat a grade level in school, have behavior problems, be diagnosed with ADD, and perform below their intellectual abilities.
It is important to detect any visual disorders early so there will not be any permanent developmental vision problems resulting from undetected eye problems. Children should have the chance to learn at their full capacity.
Most babies and toddlers tend to have farsighted vision, meaning their vision at a distance is better than near vision. If this farsightedness continues in school, the child’s ability to learn will become more difficult because the work in front of them may be in and out of focus or their eyes may fatigue quicker than the normal level. Children having difficulty seeing the chalkboard (nearsightedness) are often detected sooner by the teacher or parent because the vision symptoms are more obvious.
There are many options for vision correction for children. If the prescription is minor, generally the child is monitored yearly to ensure the vision does not change too much to cause vision problems. However, if the prescription is outside the normal standard, prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses will be prescribed to ensure that the eyes will develop properly.
Remember to make an appointment for all of your children. Call our office today so that you can have peace of mind that your children can excel to their full potential without visual barriers.
